DTF printing (Direct-to-Film) is a super versatile way to put high-quality designs onto fabric—especially when DTG or vinyl starts feeling limiting. Here’s the lowdown in plain English 👇
What is DTF Printing?
DTF (Direct-to-Film) is a heat-transfer method where you:
Print your design onto a special PET film
Apply adhesive powder to the wet ink
Cure it (dry the glue)
Heat-press the design onto fabric
Instead of printing directly on the shirt (like DTG), you print onto a film first, then transfer it. This makes it work on way more materials.
How the Technology Works (Step-by-Step)
1️⃣ Design Creation
Create your artwork in software like Adobe Photoshop or CorelDRAW.
2️⃣ Printing on Film
A special DTF printer prints your design onto PET film using:
CMYK inks (color)
White ink (for opacity on dark fabrics)
3️⃣ Adhesive Powder
While the ink is still wet, sprinkle hot-melt adhesive powder on top.
This is what makes the print stick to the fabric.
4️⃣ Curing
You heat the film (with a curing oven or heat press hover) to melt the powder into a glue layer.
5️⃣ Heat Press Transfer
Press the film onto the garment using a heat press (about 130–160°C for 10–15 seconds, varies by powder).
6️⃣ Peel & Finish
After cooling (cold or warm peel depending on film type), peel off the film.
Often you do a second quick press to lock it in and smooth the texture.
